New Old Timers is a Brooklyn collective reimagining American roots music—fiddle tunes, country songs, spirituals, and blues—through the adventurous spirit of modern jazz. For over a decade, the band has brought this sound to clubs and festivals across the Northeast and Canada.
Think Old and New Dreams playing Robert Johnson and the Carter Family: two saxophones (doubling on banjo and pump organ), bass, and drums celebrating the depth of American melody, rhythm, and harmony. The result is music that’s earthy, joyful, and alive—inviting audiences to listen, dance, and connect with the roots of the music.
The group features some of Brooklyn’s finest improvisers. The frontline includes Petr Cancura, praised by All About Jazz as a saxophonist who “takes jazz back to a rural place… as if the windows have been thrown open to let a deep breath of music flow through the jazz house,” alongside Jeremy Udden, whose playing carries both “rusticity and sincerity” (New York Times).
They’re joined by bassist Aryeh Kobrinsky (Matt Wilson, Tyshawn Sorey, John McNeil) and drummer/bandleader Vinnie Sperrazza, whose “flair for exploiting the kit’s colors” (JazzTimes) and subtle rhythmic mastery make him a driving creative force.
With deep respect for tradition and a fearless improvisational spirit, New Old Timers brings American roots music into the present—raw, communal, and full of life.
See you on the trail.
